Disney’s live-action version of the classic fairy tale Snow White has topped the North American box office chart despite a slew of underwhelming reviews.
“The movie has taken an estimated $87.3m (£67.5m) globally during its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo and BBC. Almost half of that figure came from North America alone. But it is below expectations for a film that reportedly cost more than $270m, according to the BBC.
“The reworking of the 1937 feature length animation had seemed like a surefire hit before running into a series of controversies ahead of its release,” added the BBC. Truthfully despite poor reviews, Snow White is still a character that women and girls of all ages like to emulate, and for this reason, the ending where Snow White becomes strong and saves the kingdom, should resonate with girls looking for a heroine. Drawing today’s modern approach to the Walt Disney Company characters gives students and artists a new way to look at the classic 1937 animated film.
